However, its management of network access attempts by local programs leaves something to be desired. Out of the box, it doesnt do program control at all. It just allows outbound network traffic and blocks any unsolicited inbound traffic. If you enable its interactive mode, you get a popup query every time a new program requests network access. To make it remember your choice, you must enter the settings password and respond to a UAC prompt every time. It goes beyond HIPS, adding an IDS Intrusion Detection System, but I couldnt manage to goad the IDS into action. At least the firewall proved resistant to direct attack. I much prefer the program control system in advanced suites like Norton and Kaspersky Total Security, where the firewall makes its own decisions about network permissions. Email protection includes both spam filtering and malware scanning, for both POP3 and IMAP accounts. It integrates with several Microsoft email clients those using another client can define a message rule to divert spam. You can blacklist known spammers, and the program automatically whitelists your correspondents. Parental control in this suite consists solely of content filtering and logging of blocked content. The filter proved effective in testing, even for sites using HTTPS, but thats all. If you need serious parental control in your suite, consider Kaspersky or Symantec Norton Security Premium. Devices that havent shown up in a scan for a while move to outer circles. It tries to identify the name and type of each device if it gets something wrong you can correct it by hand. Scanning all devices for insecure settings took about 2. A scan of the same network with Bitdefender Home Scanner turned up quite a few devices with security issues. For your online financial transactions, Banking and Payment Protection puts extra protection around your default browser. It kicks in automatically when it detects a known financial site, and puts a green border around the browser so youll know its active. Bitdefender and Kaspersky both offer a similar feature. ESET advises using the hardened browser only for sensitive transactions, not for everyday web surfing. Youve probably seen news stories about creepy hackers peeking at people through webcams. Doing its bit for spyware protection, ESET extends Device Control to include control over your webcam. You can use it to disable the webcam, re enabling it manually when you have a video call. You can allow specific programs to use the webcam, blocking all others. And you can set it to ask you when a new program tries to peek through the camera, just as the similar features in Bitdefender and Kaspersky do. In previous versions, the Anti Theft system only appeared in Smart Security Premium. With version 1. 1, the entry level security suite includes Anti Theft.
